Mary Westell is Director of the Centre for Scholarly Communication at University of Calgary. In over 30 years of library work, Westell has led a diverse portfolio of technology projects, including implementation of integrated library systems, planning, development, and introduction of the popular and heavily used Information Commons facility at the MacKimmie Library, development of the scholarly institutional repository, DSpace@UCalgary.ca, and creation of over 30 digital collections, including Our Roots, Canada's Local Histories and Our Future Our Past: the Alberta Heritage Digitization Project. She has presented at numerous conferences nationally and regionally and served on and chaired committees of the Canadian Library Association, the Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL), The Alberta Library (TAL), and the Library Association of Alberta. Working in collaboration, she has obtained funding from a variety of provincial and national granting agencies to support software and content development (Allectra electronic reserve, GEODE licensing and metadata for Alberta GIS data, LANDRU local access to networked data retrieval, Alberta online collection of aerial photographs, etc.) As a researcher, she has served on the University Associate Deans (Research) Committee and the Research Development and Policy Committee and is currently a member of the Management Committee of the Prairie Regional Research Data Centre. Principal Investigator for the prairie node of the national CFI-funded Synergies project, Westell serves on the national Synergies Steering Committee.
